ABOUT US

HORIZONS IS (7 points):

1.) A service-learning approach.

Participants learn through real world problem-solving,

travel, & exchange. They play a critical role in project

planning, management, & assessment.

 

2.) An academic achievement strategy.

Programs emphasize university visits (including informal interviews

with professors & students), research, documentation, &

presentation skills that support classroom

(& encourage lifelong) learning.

 

3.) A cultural preservation and continuation strategy.

Participants represent tribal history & culture during their travels &

are encouraged to participate in local cultural activities & programs

(including pow wows, social sweats, language camps, & local arts)

prior to and after traveling. Visiting cultural and heritage sites

& exploring how these sites are depicted & presented

to the public is critical to the program.

 

4.) A partnership devlopment strategy.

Programs aim to connect participants with other youth-serving

& development-focused organizations & partners - including

universities, non-profits, foundations, and other initiatives.

 

5.) A community economic devlopment strategy.

Participants gain the financial tools and technical skills needed for

local & online entrepreneurship. Programs attempt to help

local artists & entrepreneurs access a global market.

 

6.) A community-youth devlopment strategy.

Participants complete research that can inform local decision-making

about community health & the built environment - primarily, by

monitoring walking & community design at home & places travelled.

Participants demonstrate to themselves, their community, and others the

resources they offer NOW and not just "in the future."

 

7.) An introduction to sustainable development.

Programs emphasize the global impact of our decisions, including

what we buy, how we use resources, where we visit, & how we travel.

Participants attempt to calculate & off-set some of the environmental costs

of program travel via tools created by / contributions to Native Energy.

Participants also learn more about the cultural impacts of tourism

& try to engage in sustainable travel.
